Semmozhi Poonga (செம்மொழிப் பூங்கா) is Coimbatore’s landmark botanical garden at Gandhipuram, inaugurated on November 25, 2025 by Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin. Built on 45 acres of the former Coimbatore Central Prison site at a cost of ₹208.5 crore, it features 23 themed gardens, over 5 lakh plants from 2,000+ species, and modern facilities — making it the most significant public park in the city.

About the Park
The name “Semmozhi Poonga” means “Classical Language Garden” — a tribute to Tamil’s status as a classical language. The project was first announced during the 2010 World Classical Tamil Conference. Phase 2 will expand the park to 165 acres once the central prison relocates to Bilichi.
The park uses a bio-mimetic design — replicating natural ecosystems through thoughtful plant selection and sustainable structures. Six core principles guide it: conservation, restoration, education, recreation, wellness, and environmental awareness.
The 23 Themed Gardens

Key themed sections across the 45 acres:
- Rose Garden — 2,000+ rose varieties monitored by IoT soil sensors
- Herbal Garden (Semmozhi Vanam) — Siddha and Ayurvedic medicinal plants with information boards
- Water Garden — Lotus, water lilies, and bamboo groves around reflection pools
- Pollinator Garden — Flowering species designed to attract butterflies and bees
- Rock Garden — Drought-resistant plants with stone structures; popular for photography
- Bamboo Garden — Shaded groves with species used for crafts and construction
- Aroma Garden — Jasmine, mogra, and other fragrant flowering plants
- Sangam Literature Plants — 219 species referenced in ancient Tamil Sangam texts
- Endangered Species Section — Protects Hildegardia populifolia and the Bentinck Palm
Plant Collections

Over 5 lakh (500,000+) plants from 2,000+ species — many endangered or nationally significant:
- Native trees: Neem, teak, peepal, tamarind, banyan, champak
- Aquatic plants: Water lilies and lotus in lake sections
- 219 species from classical Tamil Sangam literature (malai poovarasu, kalipada, and more)
- Critically endangered species including Hildegardia populifolia and Bentinckia condapanna (Bentinck Palm)
Every plant has a QR code barcode label for visitor scanning. A dedicated mobile app (under development) will add botanical information via an animated guide character.

Cultural Heritage Elements
The park celebrates Tamil classical heritage alongside its botanical mission:
- Kadai Ezhu Vallalgal statues and murals — Seven Sangam-era philanthropists depicted throughout, connecting visitors to Tamil literary tradition
- Pari’s Chariot installation — A jasmine-creeper recreation of the Sangam-era story of King Pari, who sacrificed his chariot to support a vine
- V.O. Chidambaram Pillai site (Phase 2) — The freedom fighter’s prison oil press and cell will be preserved as a heritage monument
Technology
- IoT soil monitoring — Sensors track moisture, temperature, and nutrient levels, optimising irrigation in sensitive garden areas
- QR code plant labels — Every tree and plant scannable for detailed botanical data
- AR-VR Experience Centre — Planned immersive content on ecosystems and conservation
- 12D Theatre — Under construction for multi-sensory nature films
Sustainability
Semmozhi Poonga operates on recycled water: irrigation comes from the Ukkadam Sewage Treatment Plant via a dedicated pipeline. A 2 km German-technology rainwater harvesting system stores up to 15 lakh litres (1.5 million litres) in sumps for dry-season use. Native and drought-resistant plant species reduce ongoing water demand.
Photography Spots

- Grand entrance waterfalls — The most-photographed spot; artificial waterfalls with landscaped surroundings
- Designated selfie zones — Curated artistic backdrops throughout the park
- Rose Garden — Colour close-ups of 2,000+ varieties
- Water Garden — Reflection pool compositions
Personal photography is included in the entry fee. Video cameras require an extra ₹50.
Best Time to Visit
Morning (10 AM–12 PM): Cooler, quieter, soft photography light. Best for walkers and solo visitors.
Evening (4–7:30 PM): Livelier; families arrive, pleasant temperatures, beautiful sunset light.
Weekdays (Tue–Fri) are quieter. Weekends attract families and larger groups.
By season: Winter (November–February) is most comfortable. Monsoon (June–September) makes the gardens especially lush. Summer (March–May) — morning or evening only.
